O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early part of 2005, when she was a high school student. The judges loved her voice and she made it to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil was given high praise by the judges. However, she experienced major losses during the Top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals, when she fell to the lowest 3 and 2 spots respectively. The judges were shocked by the results and encouraged viewers to show support for singers with impressive singing skills such as Melissa. After giving consistently stellar performance from then onwards, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. The two other performances she gave on September 7,2005, in which O'Neil made it into the final two of the finals of the competition, Werner said that in the morning, newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie as she became the third Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil received a phone call from Canadian the Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on being the winner of Canadian Idol immediately.
